esoteric lover (EP)

Released July 2022

Tracklist

1. telly call/ 2. of what is ephemeral and essential/ 3. home is but a phantom edifice/ 4. planetary folklore/ 5. (i love you)

Is our human project deeply entrenched in collective myth-making? Yes. Quite deeply; Myth-making is about existential survival.

Our realities operate on the endless tangle of narratives upon narratives upon narratives, which are constructed and re-constructed over millennia to fit a variety of evolving and often contradictory relational needs.

Building upon these ideas, this album explores what it means to be and call ourselves lovers of the stories we weave for ourselves, about others, and our world in the name of understanding "our place." The mystery (for me) lies in the magnitude of such an undertaking– we essentially cannot fathom *any* of this. And yet, myth-making has always been relevant and consequential.

One effect of esoteric loving may be a complicated attachment to things and people, which harbors its own kind of sacred power (of nostalgia?).

Everything accepts more meaning with time.

My first sampling project meditates on the necessary destruction and reconstruction of meaning, memory, and identity, resulting in a product that is far more interesting than its subdivisions.

"turntable drawing no.16": Crackling Vinyl Sunrise

Premiered in 2017, turntable drawing no. 16 is a fascinating, contemporary classical piece by Giacomo Fiore, Danny Clay, and Jon Fischer that “combines three turntables playing locked-groove records with a score for electric guitar featuring looped chordal fragments.” The atmospheric effect of this is surprisingly tactile: Buzzing, crackling vinyl brings the warmth of an ambient sunrise, while electric guitar disrupts the deceptively serene soundscape and musters its own pleasant welcome. You can experience it live at the turntable drawing no. 16 album release party this Saturday at the Center for New Music, complete with live performance, a homemade record exhibit, and a most intriguing “turntable petting zoo.”

"Glass, Works!" : Goosebump-Worthy Noise

Noise is full of artistic potential. Glass, Works! is a joyful tribute to modern musique concrète and the whims of experimental sound design. Utilizing one of the most innocuous of materials, the Oakland-based project L&M (Liam Herb and Milo Moyer-Battick) craft a beautiful, meditative noisescape from glass. The duo utilizes a variety of production and compositional techniques with contact mics, digital sampler, and glass and non-glass instrumentation: “tuned wine and beer bottles blown as flutes,” crystal wine glasses struck with mallets, walkie talkies, cellphones, and much more. The full work is split into three parts, each track harboring its own sonic mystery of how its soundscape was achieved.

Experimental music often runs the risk of leaning far too intellectual. But not always: This work is a fantastic achievement of atmosphere, straight from the ether. L&M have not only forged an industrial, totally listenable sound exercise from playful means, but also a piece that is transportive, meaningful, even alchemical in the listening. Glass, Works! is an insightful reminder of the plethora of instruments we have at our disposal to craft sound worlds with absolute, tangible, listening impact.
